Being long-sighted at school

I always struggled with school work when I was younger. The words just seem to swim in front of my eyes, and I found it hard to concentrate on the page. It wasn't until much later that I realised that I was long-sighted. As soon as I got prescription glasses, I suddenly found it much easier to read and actually started to enjoy reading for relaxation. I wish I'd gotten glasses so much earlier. This blog is all about getting glasses for long-sighted kids and has some tips on knowing when a kid should be taken to the optometrist for an eye test.

Keep Your Eyes Healthy With These Handy Tips

by Eduardo Ortiz

When most people think of eye care, they typically envision paying a visit to an optometrist and getting some prescription contacts or glasses. Although these are valid ways to correct your vision problems, you should bear in mind that optimal eyesight starts with preventative care. Knowing how best to care for your eyes can significantly decrease your proclivity for eye diseases, diminished vision, the development of cataracts and an array of other problems. Below are just some of the numerous measures that you can take to keep your eyes healthy for longer.

Quit smoking

Most people are aware of the health concerns that smoking raises. Nevertheless, a majority of individuals associate the risks of smoking with lung disease and other respiratory ailments. In truth, smoking can also hurt your eyesight. If you maintain the habit to later on in your life, you increase your chances of developing macular degeneration. Moreover, smoking also poses the risk of cataracts as well as ocular nerve damage, and both can subsequently cause blindness. Thus, if you are looking to care for your eyesight for the long-term, you should quit smoking.

Invest in sunnies with UV protection

When you go out to buy sunglasses, chances are you focus more on the style of the glasses and the cost. The problem with solely using these to determine your decision is that you are not taking any measures to keeping your eyes protected when you are out in the sun. Rather than focusing on the price, you need to whittle down your options based on UV protection. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can put you at risk of developing cataracts in your eyes. Additionally, sun exposure also makes you vulnerable to skin cancer. Just as you protect your skin against the Aussie sun with sunscreen, take it a notch further and protect your eyes with UV-protective sunnies too!

Give your eyes a rest

In decades past, consciously giving your eyes a rest was not a concern that people had. However, in this digital age, it is imperative to protect your eyes against eyestrain. With all the screens that you stare at during the day, ranging from laptops, phones and even your LED TV screen, your eyes are overworked. Nonetheless, since it can be challenging to avoid digital technology in your day to day, some people may be clueless about how much they are straining their eyes. As a rule of thumb, try to limit your screen time and take a break after every other hour, so that your eyes get some much-deserved rest.
