About Me

Being long-sighted at school

I always struggled with school work when I was younger. The words just seem to swim in front of my eyes, and I found it hard to concentrate on the page. It wasn't until much later that I realised that I was long-sighted. As soon as I got prescription glasses, I suddenly found it much easier to read and actually started to enjoy reading for relaxation. I wish I'd gotten glasses so much earlier. This blog is all about getting glasses for long-sighted kids and has some tips on knowing when a kid should be taken to the optometrist for an eye test.

How Glasses That Can Automatically Change their Prescription Could Be on the Horizon

by Eduardo Ortiz

Many people need to rely on multiple pairs of glasses due to the fact that their prescriptions have changed with advancing years. It's not uncommon for somebody to have a different pair of glasses for reading, compared to one that they may wear when surfing the web. They may yet have another different prescription when they are driving the car and it can certainly be challenging to know where you've put the specific pair of glasses for your upcoming need. Now, however, technology may be changing all that, with a new type of adjustable prescription eyewear in the works.

Dialled in Option

One company based in the UK is developing glasses that have adjustable focus, meaning that their strength can be adjusted by turning the dial according to what activity you need them for. As you turn the dial, two polycarbonate plates move and adjust the lens angle. Interestingly, this technology is not as new as you might think as it was initially introduced about four decades ago. However, today's version is much more practical and cost-effective. It works on the principle that your eyes will quickly tell you when you have "dialled in" the right setting, as otherwise you will feel that you are straining to do what you're trying to do.

Sophisticated Alternative

The latest technology however introduces a new element. In this case when adjustments are made fluid is introduced into the lens, so that its curvature changes. This is not a case of adjusting a dial and trying to zero in on the ideal setting, but it is based on three exact prescriptions, specific to the wearer. These adjustments are therefore preset and convert the power of the glasses, as determined by an optometrist.

Replacing Varifocals?

Many people think that these glasses may over time replace the varifocal lenses that older people have become used to. Sometimes, people find it difficult to get used to these varifocals, which physically divide the actual lens between distance and reading. The new type of lens will have a very discreet, tiny switch built into the arms. This can very quickly adjust to the three different presets, programmed according to the prescription.
